
Why would you put oil on oily or acne-prone skin? It's a fair question and one we asked ourselves when we started researching the formula for our acne-prone skin cream. The answer surprised us. The problem with oily and acne-prone skin isn't that it produces too much oil, it’s that it produces the wrong kind.
Before we get into the science behind that, there's something worth addressing that most skincare articles get wrong. Acne-prone skin is not the same as oily skin and the two don't always come together. Acne shows up on dry skin too, and more often than most people expect. When the skin barrier is compromised and skin lacks sufficient moisture, the sebaceous glands compensate by producing more oil. That compensatory oil surges unevenly and in quantities the skin can't manage efficiently. It mixes with the dead skin cells that dry skin sheds less efficiently, creating exactly the clogged follicle environment that drives breakouts. A 2024 review published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology confirmed that acne-affected skin consistently shows measurable reductions in key barrier lipids and elevated water loss through the skin, regardless of whether that skin presents as oily or dry on the surface.
The point is that acne-prone is a skin tendency, not a skin type. Someone with genuinely oily skin and someone with dry, tight, flaky skin can both experience persistent breakouts for overlapping but distinct reasons. The linoleic acid deficiency we're going to explain shortly is documented across both presentations. So is the inflammatory pathway that borage oil addresses. This cream was formulated for oily skin, acne-prone skin, and anyone dealing with the frustrating combination of both at once. Whether your skin runs oily by nature, breaks out despite being dry, or sits somewhere in the middle of both, the biochemistry behind this formula was built with all of those presentations in mind.
The Problem Isn't Too Much Oil. It's the Wrong Oil.
Here’s what the research actually shows about acne-prone skin and sebum. People with acne-prone skin don't necessarily produce more oil than people without acne. What they produce is oil with a different composition. Specifically, their sebum contains measurably lower levels of linoleic acid compared to people without acne.
Linoleic acid is an omega-6 essential fatty acid that plays a specific and documented role in sebum health. When it's present in adequate amounts, sebum remains fluid, thin, and able to move freely through the follicle. When linoleic acid levels are low, sebum becomes thicker, stickier, and more prone to accumulating inside the follicle rather than flowing out normally. That thickened sebum is what combines with dead skin cells to form the comedones that are the first stage of every acne breakout. Gently removing that surface accumulation every day is one of the most accessible things you can do to reduce that risk. A landmark study by Stewart and colleagues published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology established the linoleic acid dilution effect in acne-prone skin. As sebum production increases, the proportion of linoleic acid within it decreases. More sebum means the same amount of linoleic acid spread across a larger volume, diluting its concentration below the threshold the skin needs for healthy follicle function. This explains why oily skin and acne so often go together. It also explains why the solution isn't to strip the skin of oil. Stripping the skin of oil removes whatever linoleic acid remains, makes the deficiency worse, and triggers the compensatory sebum production we just described. The skin responds to being stripped by producing more of the wrong kind of sebum. The cycle continues.
A comedone is a clogged hair follicle. When sebum and dead skin cells combine inside a follicle and block it, the result is either a blackhead if the pore is open to air or a whitehead if it stays closed. These are the earliest stage of acne, the foundation that everything else, the redness, the inflammation, the painful nodules, builds on top of. A clinical trial found that topical application of a 2.5 percent linoleic acid preparation reduced the size of micro-comedones, the microscopic early-stage clogs that precede visible breakouts, by approximately 25 percent after one month of treatment. The mechanism is straightforward. Delivering linoleic acid directly to the skin restores the fatty acid balance in sebum, keeps it thinner and more fluid, and reduces the likelihood of follicle blockage before it starts. The research describes this as a comedolytic effect, meaning linoleic acid actively helps prevent and dissolve comedone formation rather than just avoiding making it worse.There's also a ceramide connection worth knowing about. Linoleic acid is a building block for certain ceramides in the skin. Low linoleic acid in acne-prone skin doesn't just affect sebum composition, it also contributes to ceramide deficiency, which compromises the skin barrier, which drives the follicular hyperkeratinization that traps sebum inside the pore. In acne-prone skin, the ceramide deficiency and the linoleic acid deficiency are connected at the root. Addressing linoleic acid topically is addressing both problems simultaneously.
Why Most Safflower Oil Is the Wrong Kind
Before we explain why high-linoleic safflower oil is in this formula, there's a distinction worth making that most people never encounter because most product labels don't tell you.
There are two types of safflower oil. High-oleic safflower oil is high in oleic acid, an omega-9 fatty acid that is excellent for cooking at high temperatures and has a long shelf life but is not particularly beneficial for acne-prone skin. This is the version you'll find in virtually every grocery store, often labeled simply as safflower oil with no further distinction.
High-linoleic safflower oil is a different product. It contains 70 to 80 percent linoleic acid, making it one of the richest plant-based sources of this fatty acid available. It is specifically this version that the research on linoleic acid and acne-prone skin is relevant to. It is also specifically this version that we use in our acne-prone skin cream.
The high-oleic version that fills most store shelves does not address the linoleic acid deficiency in acne-prone sebum. For acne-prone skin, reaching for the wrong type of safflower oil could make things worse rather than better. The high-linoleic version is the one the research supports and the one that belongs in a formula designed for this skin type.
The Enzyme Bottleneck and Why Borage Oil Bypasses It
Safflower oil addresses one part of the acne puzzle. Borage oil addresses a different one entirely. Understanding why both are in this formula starts with an enzyme most people have never heard of.
Your body converts linoleic acid into gamma-linolenic acid, known as GLA, through a metabolic process that involves an enzyme called delta-6-desaturase. GLA is an omega-6 fatty acid with potent anti-inflammatory properties that are directly relevant to acne. The problem is that delta-6-desaturase is a rate-limiting enzyme, meaning it's the bottleneck in the entire conversion process. Several factors impair its activity including stress, aging, high glycemic diets, elevated insulin levels, and certain inflammatory skin conditions. For people with oily and acne-prone skin, the very dietary patterns most associated with acne, high sugar and high glycemic load foods, are the same ones that inhibit this enzyme and reduce the body's ability to produce GLA efficiently.
This is where it gets specific to acne-prone skin in a way most people have never been told. Delta-6-desaturase isn't just a general metabolic enzyme working somewhere in your liver. A peer-reviewed study published in PubMed found that it expressed directly inside the sebaceous glands themselves, specifically in the sebocytes, the cells responsible for producing sebum. That changes the picture significantly. An impaired delta-6-desaturase isn't just affecting your body's general fatty acid metabolism, it’s affecting the oil-producing glands in your skin directly, thereby, influencing the composition of the sebum they produce at the source.
Human skin cannot biosynthesize GLA on its own from linoleic acid without this enzyme working efficiently. When the enzyme is impaired or insufficient, GLA levels drop. When GLA levels drop, the anti-inflammatory pathway it drives stalls. When that pathway stalls, the inflammatory component of acne, the redness, swelling, and painful nodules, has less biological opposition working against it.
Borage oil bypasses this bottleneck entirely.
Borage seed oil contains 20 to 26 percent GLA, making it the richest plant-based source of this fatty acid on earth. Evening primrose oil, its closest competitor, contains only 7 to 10 percent. When borage oil is applied topically it delivers GLA directly without requiring the delta-6-desaturase conversion step at all. The GLA is already formed. The bottleneck is irrelevant. The body can take the GLA directly and convert it through elongase enzymes to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid, known as DGLA, which then converts via cyclooxygenase enzymes to prostaglandin E1. Prostaglandin E1 has documented anti-inflammatory properties approximately 20 times stronger than prostaglandin E2, the pro-inflammatory compound it competes against.
In plain language: borage oil delivers a pre-formed anti-inflammatory compound directly to the skin, bypassing the enzyme that acne-prone skin is often least equipped to rely on.
How the Two Oils Work Together
High-linoleic safflower oil and borage oil are not doing the same job in this formula. They're addressing the acne problem from two distinct biochemical angles simultaneously.
High-linoleic safflower oil works at the sebum level. It restores the linoleic acid balance in sebum, making it thinner, more fluid, and less likely to clog follicles. It addresses the quality of the oil the skin is producing.
Borage oil works at the inflammatory pathway level. It bypasses the delta-6-desaturase bottleneck and delivers GLA directly, driving the prostaglandin E1 anti-inflammatory pathway that the skin needs to manage the inflammation driving acne lesions.
One is addressing why the pores clog while the other is addressing why the clogs become inflamed. Together they target two of the four documented drivers of acne, sebum composition and inflammation, from directions that neither oil could address alone.
There is also a dietary connection worth noting here. The high glycemic diet and acne connection we covered in our acne article is directly linked to this same enzyme. High glycemic foods spike insulin. Elevated insulin inhibits delta-6-desaturase. Inhibited delta-6-desaturase reduces GLA production. Less GLA means more inflammation. Borage oil applied topically addresses the endpoint of that chain directly, which is why the dietary and topical approaches to acne-prone skin are not competing with each other. They're working on the same problem from different directions.
How This Became a Cream
We told the origin story of this cream in our body cream article but it's worth a brief revisit here because the science we just explained is the reason the formula came together the way it did.
Clayton's oldest son Jax was dealing with significant acne in his early teens. Clayton found a natural acne balm on the market that worked well for him, and rather than just buying more of it, we did what we always do. We looked at the ingredient list and started researching why it was working. That research led us directly to the linoleic acid deficiency in acne-prone sebum, the delta-6-desaturase bottleneck, and the GLA pathway that borage oil bypasses. We built a formula around those findings and had Jax test it. Within 30 minutes of the first application the redness and inflammation visible on his face was noticeably reduced. Jax still uses his acne balm at night for his more significant breakouts, but our cream works alongside it, not instead of it, giving his skin the fatty acid support and anti-inflammatory barrier care throughout the day that his other treatment alone may not cover. That's exactly the complementary role we designed it for.
That real-world result matters to us. The science behind these two oils is compelling on paper. Watching it work on an actual person in front of us is what gave us confidence to bring it to market.
Why There's No Coconut Oil
If you've read our body cream article or our acne article you already know why coconut oil is in our dry and normal skin cream but not in this one. Coconut oil has a comedogenic rating of 4 out of 5, making it potentially pore-clogging in leave-on applications for oily and acne-prone skin. The occlusive richness that makes it beneficial for dry skin is exactly the property that makes it a risk for skin that's already dealing with clogged follicles as a primary driver of breakouts. We excluded it deliberately and we want you to know why.
The Rest of the Formula
The two oils we've spent this article explaining are the ingredients that make this formula specifically targeted to acne-prone skin. The rest of the formula is the shared base we covered in depth in our body cream article. Organic shea butter for barrier repair and documented anti-inflammatory properties. Organic golden jojoba oil for sebum regulation through its wax ester structure that signals the sebaceous glands to reduce overproduction. Organic beeswax for occlusive moisture retention without the comedogenic risk that comes from using it as the primary thickener, since we use less of it here and balance it with the powders. Vitamin E oil protecting both the formula and the polyunsaturated fatty acids in the safflower and borage oils from oxidizing. White kaolin clay, non-comedogenic with a rating of zero, preparing the skin surface and keeping pores clearer so the therapeutic oils can penetrate more effectively. Arrowroot powder creating the silky, non-greasy finish that makes this cream appropriate for oily skin without feeling heavy, and enhancing the absorption of every other ingredient in the jar.
None of those ingredients are arbitrary. Each one is doing a specific job and the combination of all of them is what makes this a cream rather than a balm, a serum, or a lotion.

The problem isn't too much oil, it’s the wrong oil. The solution isn't to strip the skin, it’s to give it the specific fatty acids it's not producing in the right amounts on its own.
